Case-Study Scenarios

The case-study scenarios below are based on real projects and clients of Elearning Delta. We present these scenarios from a more personal perspective than traditional case studies because, well, we work with people, not cases.

Elearning Delta Solutions

The Thought Leader and Entrepreneur

As a thought leader and published author, I saw elearning as an opportunity to reach millions of potential learners. The elearning environment seemed a perfect place for me to share my knowledge while marketing my books and consulting services.

Goals and Obstacles

My initial goal was to create several courses based on my book and sell them in a few of the most popular elearning marketplaces. So I set out to research the most effective way to accomplish this.

I hadn’t anticipated just how many options were available for producing online courses, the different formats the courses needed to be in, and the many requirements of each marketplace. It did not take long before I was completely overwhelmed. I needed help.

The Elearning Delta Solution

Then a colleague put me in touch with one of the founders of Elearning Delta. What a relief it was to meet with a team of professionals who know the elearning landscape so well. Elearning Delta walked me through all of my options, focusing on solutions that made the most sense for me and my long terms goals.

Planning and Recommendations

The Elearning Delta team first prepared a planning document that outlined the best elearning solutions for my courses. Recommendations included LMS options, elearning marketplaces, and self-hosted solutions.

I initially decided that I only wanted to sell my courses on a few elearning marketplaces.

Course Development

The next step was the course development. The Elearning Delta team proposed creating three separate courses based on the contents of my book. The team worked directly with me on the branding of the courses to match the look and feel of my book. They also helped me secure royalty free images, created appropriate graphics, and recruited amazing voice over talent for the video lessons.

Each 90-minute course included:

  • High definition video lessons with Closed Captioning
  • Interactive elements based on the activities in my book
  • Engaging quizzes, suggested activities, and resources
  • Certificates of completion

Once the courses were complete, I could hardly wait to get them out there!

Packaging and Preparation

The Elearning Delta team efficiently packaged the courses properly and prepared the metadata I would need to give my courses a successful start.

Each course package included:

  • High resolution video lessons
  • Formatted activities, quizzes, and resources
  • Optimized course and lesson descriptions with keywords
  • Course requirements, target audience, and learning objectives
  • Course introduction/promo video and course images

Having everything packaged up like this made the process of uploading my courses an absolute piece of cake. And I was confident in the knowledge that everything I uploaded was polished and professional.

Initial Success and Realizations

I added my courses to three of the most popular elearning marketplaces, and they did pretty well. I gained several hundred students in each marketplace, and was beginning to realize that this was a very wise investment indeed.

However, a few months into the game, something that the Elearning Delta team mentioned in their initial report was starting to become clear. Their report suggested that I also consider having my own LMS so I would have more control.

The online marketplaces provide fantastic exposure, but they take a big cut of sales and have expectations that courses be significantly discounted. In addition, it became a problem for me when I wanted to start marketing my books and consulting services to my students. This type of self-promotion is typically prohibited in the marketplaces.

LMS and Ecommerce Solutions

So in the interest of keeping more of my profits and using my courses to build my own mailing list, I decided to explore an LMS and ecommerce solution of my own. And luckily, Elearning Delta already did the footwork for me.

The next step for me was to have the Elearning Delta team set up an LMS to host my courses along with an integrated ecommerce solution so I could sell on my own. This process was so easy, too, since we already had my courses packaged up and ready to be uploaded to any LMS.

Marketing and Looking Ahead

In addition, the team prepared a sales, distribution, and marketing strategy for me to use as I grow my own elearning business. I look forward to eventually adding affiliate programs and even hosting some of my colleagues’ courses in the future.

I am excited at the prospects ahead, and thank the Elearning Delta team for their help in paving the way for me.

Your Small Business is Growing

What a good problem to have. Your dream of a successful small business endeavor is doing even better than you expected. You have survived the first two years, successfully built a small staff, and your marketing efforts show you are now in a position to open additional offices in two surrounding cities. There is a lot to do to make that happen, but duplicating your efforts is not an issue when Elearning Delta is there to help you take your training online.

Goals and Obstacles

Brent owns a high-end moving business in Austin. His business has done well and he knows he can now successfully open offices in Houston and San Antonio. Finding locations, purchasing and outfitting trucks, and hiring staff is enough to do. How will Brent train his new office workers and field staff?

Brent used off-the-shelf safety videos to train his original staff in Austin. Then he and his manager did hands-on, in-the-field training with all employees to show them exactly how their moving service was more particular than the average company. Brent showed his movers the correct way to prepare expensive, collectable items for transport, along with other techniques that form a unique part of his company’s service. He also used this time to instill his company values and philosophy.

Now that there was going to be multiple offices, Brent didn’t know how to ensure his staff would maintain the same high expectations that set his company apart.

The Elearning Delta Solution

Elearning Delta set Brent up on an affordable LMS. His administrative staff had already purchased some safety courses and they uploaded them to the system. Then Elearning Delta showed the administrative staff how to add users and track staff compliance on taking courses.

Brent also needed a way to replace the hands-on training, so Elearning Delta suggested creating video courses to provide all the hands-on specifics that make the company’s moving services so unique.

Course Development

Elearning Delta sent video crews out to shoot Brent and his supervisors training employees how to do the particular work they do. The video courses explained why Brent’s customers expect a different level of service and care. The courses had assessment quizzes at the end and successful completion required an 80% score.

Each course had a 15 to 30-minute duration. This made it easy for employees to take a quick refresher on their mobile devices whenever they needed to prepare for a job involving antiques, art, or other specialty items.

Brent supplements the courses with monthly videos about the company culture. He shoots these himself and adds them to the LMS so all his employees can access them easily from any location. They can watch the videos as a group or individually on their own time. It’s a great way to get his corporate message out while retaining the small company feel.

Administrators in Brent’s home office track the employees’ compliance and assessment reports.

LMS Solutions

The LMS also provides employees with a way to communicate issues and suggestions to the management as a whole. There is also a forum for staff to talk to each other across satellite offices. This helps them to share useful tips and recount any unusual work experiences they may have encountered. The ability to keep in touch in this way creates a sense of community and helps tie the company together as a whole.

Initial Success and Realizations

Brent’s new offices are doing well. He has a very low staff turnover rate and the training process is so efficient the managers at the satellite offices have no reservations about employing new or temporary workers whenever they have extra jobs.

Brent is thrilled the expansion has not detracted from his company values or affected the quality of work. When he started his company he had specific goals and philosophies. He also liked the contact and control he had with his employees. Brent doesn’t feel any of this has been compromised by his company’s growth.

Looking Ahead

Brent has no reservations about scaling his business now that his systems are in place. Everything works well. The training is flexible, but all of Brent’s high standards have been maintained. He is now looking at creating a franchise model of his business because he knows seamless, scalable training is the cornerstone all successful franchises share.

Elearning Delta Slide 7

The Professor

When I first started thinking about writing an introduction to music textbook, I knew I wanted it to be something special. I wanted to create a text that helped students experience the music, not just read about it.

Vision and Obstacles

My vision for the text was to utilize audio and video elements similar to what I do in the classroom. I envisioned this project as an experiential textbook that tapped into the way students already consume information online. Was I asking too much?

The Elearning Delta Solution

Then my publisher told me about interactive ebooks and how they might be a good solution to my vision. After one conversation with the Elearning Delta team, I knew right away that this was the perfect solution and team for me!

Planning and Recommendations

As I explained my vision to the Elearning Delta team, they outlined options to accommodate my needs and discussed what it would take to bring them to fruition. They also suggested additional interactive elements that could make the student experience even better.

The biggest challenge for me during this phase was wanting to include everything that was feasible. There were so many options, that initially, you want them all. But the team helped me decide which elements would add value for the students, and which would simply be gratuitous.

In the end, we decided on the following elements for this interactive learning experience:

  • Short text lessons with images and embedded video
  • Pre- and post-reflection journal activities
  • Discussion forums for student interaction
  • True/False quizzes to test reading comprehension
  • Audio quizzes to test music comprehension
  • Interactive vocabulary flash cards
  • Linkable resource and bibliographic lists

Interactive Ebook Development

I realized that an interactive ebook was going to involve different work from me than a traditional book. Not only did the text need to be written and edited; but the multimedia, activities, and assessments needed to be researched and prepared.

Luckily, in addition to editorial support, the Elearning Delta team prepared most of the media elements including:

  • Acquiring royalty-free images and permissions
  • Verifying links to external video
  • Extracting and preparing audio clips
  • Preparing and uploading downloadable resources

The team also helped make the job easier by organizing the entire process and managing the many tasks necessary to help me meet my deadlines.

LMS and Ecommerce

Elearning Delta uploaded all the elements of the course to a custom LMS that also provided grading and reporting capabilities. I can even download grades and other data for use in my University’s LMS.

Once the process was complete, the team ran the entire experience through strict testing procedures and provided instructional videos to guide students through the book.

Elearning Delta also worked closely with my publisher to streamline the ecommerce and enrollment process as much as possible.

Initial Success and Realizations

I was impressed with how smoothly the launch went. Students had very few problems accessing and navigating the learning experience. They loved the videos and audio clips, and did an amazing job completing the activities.

During the first use of the text in one of my college classes, however, I realized that we were still asking the students to do more than they could handle. The Elearning Delta team helped me trim things down for the next iteration.

The team also helped me set up different versions of the interactive ebook to accommodate both the fully-online sections of my class and the face-to-face sections.

Looking Ahead

My students continue to enjoy the experience that my interactive ebook provides them. I use the book every term for several sections of my introduction to music class.

Many professors in my department want something similar, and one is now working with Elearning Delta to make that happen.

We are also exploring the possibility of allowing professors from any college the opportunity to use my interactive ebook in their courses.

The Human Resources Manager

Miranda is the HR manager at a mid-sized healthcare facility for head injury patients. There are 120+ staff members and, although their turnover is lower than most similar facilities, they constantly have new-hire training as well as annual renewal training to meet state requirements. The company also has plans to expand.

Goals and Obstacles

Currently, the company uses a classroom where the various doctors (neurologists), physical therapists, and administrators teach training classes to the staff. The CEO charged Miranda with taking their training online because the department heads were spending too much time in the training rooms, and the company wanted the ability to scale and duplicate. They tried to increase the number of staffers to conduct the training sessions, but this introduced differing approaches and diluted the core-values message that is very important to the company.

Miranda already had a full schedule of HR duties so wanted the easiest solution to taking their training online. Once she started to look, she found a plethora of LMS platforms, but these were software companies. The support was an 800 number. She didn’t understand what type of courses she could upload to the LMS, how to create those courses, and ultimately how to automate certificates and compliance reports. She told her boss it was more complicated than they anticipated.

The Elearning Delta Solution

The CEO found Elearning Delta and was impressed by the way we assess an organization’s needs, provide a tailor-made solution, and make the transition seamless by providing a team to work alongside their trainers and develop the right path.

Planning and Adherence

The Elearning Delta project manager provided a comprehensive plan and schedule to transition the company’s training to the online environment. The writers worked closely with the expert instructors to ensure the online courses adhered to the science and teachings they wanted. Elearning Delta’s tech team worked with the HR administrator to develop features of an LMS, and ensure thorough and easy reporting capabilities.

Course Development

The company is one of the forerunners in neuroplasticity. It is their philosophy to train employees at every level , even care givers, in the science of neuroplasticty. This allows employees to be more involved with the patient’s treatment process, relaying behaviors and attributes to the physical therapists and doctors. This type of empowerment not only benefits the patient, but increases employee retention.

Although the doctors wanted to spend less time in the classroom and more time on medicine, they were wary about giving up their instruction to online courses. The classroom allowed for questions, scenarios and discussions with the staff. The Elearning Delta writers developed video courses that used engaging instruction, then reiterated the instruction with video of the instructors providing real life scenarios, and anecdotal experiences in patient care. The doctors were more than satisfied with the courses, and quickly saw that online courses provide a consistent baseline of training to refer to, allowing mentors more one-on-one time with employees.

Each 60-minute course included:

  • Instructional video slides with images, professional voice over, video segments of instructors providing real-life examples.
  • An assessment quiz. Students needed an 80% score to pass the course. Students who did not achieve this were provided with suggestions about which areas of the course they needed to review.
  • Certificates of completion

LMS Solutions

The LMS customization provided the healthcare facility with a branded site that incorporated company values. The employees could easily log into the LMS at work, at home, and on mobile devices. This allowed them to complete their training anywhere, or review material at any time.

The LMS interface allowed Miranda and the HR team to easily add or remove users, and change users access credentials to enable more admins when necessary. They could also quickly run reports on compliance for individual employee evaluation, and for facility inspections and compliance.

Initial Success and Realizations

Miranda and the CEO heard rave reviews of the course content and engagement. The initially skeptical doctors and trainers felt they retained control of their courses and content. They were impressed with the quality of the presentation and learning experience. They also found they had extra time to spend on furthering the goals of the company and mentoring staff in a more beneficial way.

The HR department loved the ability to monitor staff progress, and easily report employee training compliance to the state officials that regulate health facilities.

The leadership had a new confidence in their ability to scale while maintaining their impeccable training philosophies, and ensuring their company values would not get lost while growing the company.

Looking Ahead

The internal online staff training was so successful for the company that they implemented a Family Education LMS Site for family members of facility patients, and for patient after care. Many of the staff training courses were slightly edited to educate family members on brain injury and neuroplasticity.

A Necessity for Franchises

Training is one of the most important assets for a franchise company. Online training is the answer for scaling and providing the most comprehensive package to franchisees. Elearning Delta has been approached by both franchisors and franchisees with training issues.

John is an owner of a large property disaster cleanup franchise. The franchises provide cleanup services to homes and offices after floods, fires, and other disasters. John and his partners are experts in this specific type of cleanup and know all about the equipment required.

Goals and Obstacles

John’s franchising formula was working well for over 140 branches nationally. The franchise was growing quickly and had great prospects. The franchise management provided franchisees with detailed training on cleaning equipment, special techniques, disaster circumstances and relief, and the insurance claim process. These were topics John and his management knew well.

But they soon started getting queries and complaints from franchisees who were unsure about how to hire personnel, HR issues, bookkeeping and marketing, and how to use the company software. The latter issue was critical because the software managed data for franchise payments to the home office.

John began sending out teams of trainers to the franchisees’ offices to administer specialized training. Their most successful franchisee, Max, had a knack for customer service, but literally kept track of his jobs on a pad in his pocket. The company flew the training team in once a month to invoice Max’s customers and do his franchise reports – not the most efficient use of their time.

The Elearning Delta Solution

The Elearning Delta team knew they could implement a much more efficient solution for John, at the lowest possible cost. They proposed using off-the-shelf training courses for hiring, HR compliance, marketing, and customer relations. They also suggested custom courses for teaching the franchise software, and a Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver the training easily and track the franchisees’ compliance.

Course Development

The Elearning Delta project manager provided a comprehensive plan and schedule to develop online courses. Elearning Delta videoed the training team explaining how to use the marketing tools the franchise provides to the franchisees, and how to hire field staff, administrative support, and marketing personnel for their industry. They also created a screen-capture video that demonstrated the correct use of the franchise sales software.

The Elearning Delta course library already contained courses on general HR issues, tax compliance for franchises, and industry-specific safety issues. The team applied the franchise’s branding to these courses.

Each course had either a survey to show employee participation or a quiz the employee was required to pass.

LMS Solutions

The courses were loaded to an LMS customized to the franchise. The Elearning Delta team made sure the transition was seamless from the corporate resource website, to the LMS where franchisees took their training.

The LMS provided accounts for all satellite franchises, and separate accounts for each of their employees to track their success with the training. The home office could run reports on how efficiently the franchises were applying the training, and provide the franchisee with recommendations on the best ways to succeed.

Initial Success and Realizations

The company training team had less traveling to do, so it saved a lot of time and money. When they visited franchises it was to mentor rather than playing catch-up on financial reports. John and the trainers made webinars for motivational purposes and about pertinent issues that affected the franchisees. They were able to post these to the LMS and see which franchises were utilizing them. They even recruited Max for a customer care training video since that was his forte and part of the reason his franchise was such a success.

Looking Ahead

John, his partners, and the corporate office staff feel confident to expand the franchise. Their formula for success now includes a comprehensive training package that will get their franchisees off to the best possible start and help them to prosper and grow.

The Non-Profit Director

Charles is the director of a non-profit agency that supports law enforcement officers dealing with sexual assault cases. The agency provides training programs for officers throughout the state of Texas. They use a variety of speakers with expertise in law enforcement and victim advocacy. The officers also receive relicensing hours for attending these trainings.

Goals and Obstacles

Charles’ agency received a grant from the Governor’s office to expand their training by providing courses online. They immediately contacted the IT vendor who had developed and hosted their website. This savvy web hosting company knew that a Learning Management System (LMS) was outside their wheelhouse, and contacted Elearning Delta as a subcontractor.

The Elearning Delta Solution

Elearning Delta worked with the hosting company to implement an open source LMS solution to deliver curriculum to users across the state. Elearning Delta also presented a variety of options to adapt the speakers’ presentations to the online environment.

Planning and Compliance

The agency was able to enlist well-known national industry speakers, and they also had staff members who taught courses across the state. The Elearning Delta project manager set up a schedule for video crews to shoot the speakers’ presentations in various cities.

For the in-house staff courses, Elearning Delta’s writers and instructional designers began working with staff instructors to develop their online training material.

The agency was responsible for content compliance with the law enforcement licensing boards. This information was shared with the Elearning Delta project manager and writers to make sure the online course material would maintain this compliance.

Course Development

The national speakers were recorded on location at various law enforcement relicensing conferences. The Elearning Delta video editors created courses that consisted primarily of the speakers’ presentation, with a recorded intro. Slides were inserted where further diagrams or explanations were needed.

The instructional designers were able to do more interactive work on the agency staff courses. After the writers worked with the instructors to adapt their material to the online environment, the production team found pertinent images and created graphics. Slides with professional voice over were created to provide instruction, along with video clips of the instructors giving in-the-field demonstrations.

Knowledge checks throughout the course, ensured that participants were not skipping ahead or leaving the video to run to complete hours.

The quiz at the end of each course encouraged a 100% pass rate by providing users with an explanation whenever their answer was wrong. Users then received a certificate they could send to their relicensing board. It contained their name, the date the course was taken, and the number of qualifying hours.

LMS Solutions

Agency administrators were able to easily run reports from the LMS on participants, which courses they took, cities they worked in, their credentials, place of employment, etc. These reports were supplied to the Texas Governors office to comply with the terms of the grant.

Law enforcement officers in communities and on college campuses were able to access curriculum specifically designed to address sexual assault cases. Each user had their own account where they could track all courses they took, and show these reports to their supervisors where this training was required. Officers could access the courses anywhere from a computer or mobile device. Users accounts also held all of their relicensing certificates for future reference to their licensing board.

Success and Realizations

The agency was able to utilize national speakers, as well as vastly expand the audience of their in-house, Texas instructors. The staff no longer needed to travel around the state. This allowed them to address other needs, and the agency was spared a lot of unnecessary travel expenses.

The LMS offered the officers an opportunity to give feedback on the courses. There was overwhelming gratitude for the high level of expertise. The officers were much in need of this specific type of sexual assault training, but it had previously been very hard to find.

The participation and feedback data in the reports to the Governor’s office prompted them to give an additional, unsolicited, grant to the agency to add more needed courses for officers in Texas. Other states began to utilize the agency’s courses for relicensing of officers as well.

Looking Ahead

The agency is now adding relicensing courses for advocates assisting sexual assault victims and working with law enforcement.

The Author and Keynote Speaker

I speak at a lot of conventions and other functions around the world every year; and I use those opportunities to sell my books and DVDs.

Over the past couple years, more and more of my audience has requested access to my teachings via online courses or some other form of elearning. They want more interactivity with the material and a way to test their knowledge – maybe even download certificates.

Goals and Obstacles

I reached out to some colleagues to see how they were utilizing elearning, and most of them had planned to launch their courses either on an LMS or in an elearning marketplace.

When I asked how they planned to sell their courses during their speaking engagements, most replied “probably with a link to the course, or with a QR code.” In other words, they hadn’t really thought that far through the process.

I have been a professional speaker for a long time, and I know how to sell at my presentations. One thing I know for sure is that you need to offer something tangible. If you already have an engaged audience, the last thing you want is to make it difficult for them to buy while they have you top-of-mind.

Well, I am problem solver; which is the main reason my audience wants to hear me speak. So I set out to find a better way…

The Elearning Delta Solution

After many conversations with elearning companies and experts, I was almost ready to give up. Then I met the founders of Elearning Delta. They actually understood what it was I wanted to accomplish. And better yet, they had a solution!

They call it the Delta Widget, and it is exactly what I’d been searching for. I can produce high-resolution video lessons, and include quizzes, activities, downloadable resources, and completion certificates in a package so small I can email it. How cool is that?

Course Development

The Elearning Delta team and I decided to start with one good-sized course based on my best-selling book. I already had hours of video footage from previous speaking engagements, and wanted to repurpose as much of that as possible.

Once they developed a curriculum for the course, the team went through my video footage and pulled out what they needed. They then supplemented the video with slides, graphics, and voice over to make the lessons more cohesive and engaging. They were careful to match my branding as closely as possible.

The team designed a series of brainstorming activities similar to the ones I do in my presentations, and prepared quizzes and a snazzy certificate.

The final course includes:

  • 10 high resolution video lessons
  • Downloadable worksheets and resources
  • Graded quizzes to test knowledge
  • Brainstorming activities
  • Downloadable and printable certificate of completion (if quizzes are passed)

Packaging and Preparation

Elearning Delta securely hosts my video lessons and downloadable resources, and the entire course is packaged into a widget.

The widget uses HTML5 and other web-based scripting languages so the entire course runs from an Internet browser – and looks great on mobile devices, too.

Widget Solution

I burn my widget to thumb drives and sell them during my presentations and off of my website. It is so easy to use, I often have my audience access their version of the course during my presentations. Brilliant!

Since my website is built using WordPress, Elearning Delta provided me with a WordPress plugin that allows the widget to run on any post or page on my site. Right now I only use this option for demos.

Course Distribution

The Elearning Delta team explained to me that there are many ways I can deliver my widget course; but they cautioned that security is always an issue with products of this sort. So it is best to think through any proposed distribution methods.

But now that I know how easy the widget is to run, and how well it works, I plan to investigate more ways to get it in the hands of my followers.

Here are some of the distribution methods Elearning Delta recommended:

  • Copy it to thumb drives or DVDs to sell at speaking engagements (done)
  • Add it to my WordPress website with a plugin on a password protected page (done)
  • Sell it as a digital download or as a physical product from an ecommerce site (exploring)
  • Offer it as part of a members-only subscription platform (exploring)

Elearning Delta has a hosting solution for the entire widget (not just the videos and downloads), so I can have a central place to send people to buy it and access it from the cloud.

Looking Forward

I love the portability and simplicity of my widget, and I am so excited to explore all the different ways I can make it available to my audience. Thank you, Elearning Delta, for your forward thinking ways!
